Children of the World winners
1st Place - Outstanding Achievement Title: Lost Childhood One of the most important part of a child's life is being loved and nurtured in a family. Childhood is incomplete, even damaged, without it. But for some families, providing for their children and nurturing them with the necessary comfort is a luxury. They simply do not have the bare minimum. They end up giving their children into child labour so that they can earn money to survive. Ultimately, they become a little more than an additional - and much needed - source of income. Regardless of reasons, this essentially turns these children into day-labourers and inevitably contributes to a brutal loss of innocence. Photos show children at a ship propeller making factory at Sadarghat dockyard in Bangladesh's capital Dhaka, working without proper safety equipment and in an overall unsafe condition. They say their work starts at 7 in the morning and goes on until 7 in the evening. 12 hours of hard physical labour earns them $2.50 dollar a day. They have no weekly vacation.

2nd Place - Merit of Excellence Title: Child worker resting after hard work The photograph was taken in a municipal dumping ground in Howrah, India. The child worker is working in a plastic sorting godown on the street. The godown owners purchase these plastic wastes from scavengers / collectors. They employ children for sorting these wastes in godowns inside or outside on the street, and sell the sorted products, plastics / metal / fabrics/ papers, everything that can be re-cycled to the recycling factories. In this photograph we see a child worker taking rest after hard work. I took this photograph to show the poor conditions of these downtrodden child workers of India.
